Hua Hu Ching – Two Paths Available

UZ Study Group text from Jan 30th 2013 Hua Hu Ching The Lost Teachings of Lao Tzu #48Do you wish to free yourself of mental and emotional knots and become one with the Tao? If so, there are two paths available to you. The first is the path of acceptance. Affirm everyone and everything. Freely extend your goodwill and virtue in every direction, regardless of circumstances. Embrace all things as part of the Harmonious Oneness, and then you will begin to perceive it. The second path is that of denial. Recognize that everything you see and think is a falsehood, an illusion, a veil over the...

Practice & Enlightenment Are One – Text Reading 11/11/12

Those Who Greatly Realize Delusion are Buddhas —Guidance in Zazen by Shohaku Okumura  – adapted from the book Realizing Genjokoan Delusion is not some fixed thing within our minds that, if eliminated, will be replaced by enlightenment. The world we live in is the world we create, based on how our mind encounters the myriad dharmas. We cannot prevent our mind from creating the world as it does, but it is possible to realize that the world of our creation does not reflect true reality. Practicing with this realization, and letting go of rigid belief in the narratives and preferences of...

Secrets on Cultivating Mind ➁

Secrets on Cultivating Mind  – by Chinul, Tracing Back the Radiance Section 2 Consider sudden awakening: When people are deluded, they assume that the four great elements are the body, and the false thoughts are the mind. They do not know that their own nature is the true Dharma-body; they do not know that their own self-illuminating awareness is the true Buddha. They look for the Buddha outside  their mind. While they are thus wandering aimlessly, the entrance to the road might by chance be pointed out by a wise advisor. If, in one thought, they then follow back the light of their...

Lost in Your Mind – Text Reading 8/26/12

UZ Text Reading from Aug 26th 2012 Excerpt from; A New Earth – Eckhart Tolle “Unconscious people – and many remain unconscious, trapped in their egos throughout their lives – will quickly tell you who they are: their name, their occupation, their personal history, the shape or state of their body, and whatever else they identify with. Others may appear to be more evolved because they think of themselves as an immortal soul or living spirit. But do they really know themselves, or have they just added some spiritual sounding concepts to the content of their mind? Knowing yourself...

Text Reading from UZ Practice Period  8/12/12 Ryokans Moon Ryokan, a Zen master, lived the simplest kind of life in a little hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening a thief visited the hut only to discover there was nothing in it to steal. Ryokan returned and caught him. “You may have come a long way to visit me,” he told the prowler, “and you should not return empty-handed. Please take my clothes as a gift.” The thief was bewildered. He took the clothes and slunk away. Ryokan sat naked, watching the moon. “Poor fellow, ” he mused, “I wish I could...

UZ Text Reading from July 29th 2012 Craving The Dhammapada Chapter 24 The craving of a person who lives carelessly grows like a creeping vine. He plunges from existence to existence, like a monkey seeking fruit in the forest. Whomever this miserable craving, this entanglement in the world, overcomes, his sorrows grow, like grass well rained upon. But whoever overcomes this miserable craving, in the world hard to overcome, sorrows fall away from him, like a drop of water from a lotus blossom. I speak to you this auspicious word, to tell all you assembled here: you must dig out the root of...
