The Most Intimate – Text Reading 4/1/12

The Book of Serenity Case 20 Dizang’s Not Knowing Dizang asked Fayan, “Where are you going?” Fayan said, “Around on pilgrimage.” Dizang said, “What is the purpose of pilgrimage?” Fayan said, “I don’t know.” Dizang said, “Not knowing is most intimate.” The famous lines spoken by Joshu’s teacher, Nanquan; “The Way is not in knowing or in not knowing. Knowing is false consciousness, not knowing is indifference.” Wansong’s commentary; “Just affirm totally when affirming, but don’t settle down in...

On the Endeavor of the Way – Text Reading 3/25/12

From Master Dogen’s Moon in a Dewdrop: On the Endeavor of the Way Bendō -Wa – Verse 1 All Buddha Tathagatas who directly transmit inconceivable dharma, and actualize supreme, perfect enlightenment have a wondrous way, unsurpassed and unconditioned. Only Buddhas transmitted to Buddhas without veering off. Self-fulfilling samadhi is its standard. Sitting upright, practicing zazen is the authentic gate to the unconfined realm of this samadhi. Although this inconceivable dharma is abundant in each person, it is not actualized without practice, and it is not experienced without...

Open Sky, Weeping Willow, Kwocking Geese, Zafu’s & Soccor Balls – Notes from Practice 3/18/12

Another interesting first for U-Z… This period, we were to end our practice early for another event & also one of our members was running behind so we  needing to pick him up from the train station so we were all rushing to get to the zendo early to make sure we began service on the dot. Once we arrived, the urgency just dropped away & there was a sense that it would only be the 3 of us this day. It was a beautiful warm day out so we decided to take the Zendo outside ! We packed some supplies & grabbed some cushions & waited to make sure there were no stranglers before...

Meeting One Thing : Genjo Koan – Text Reading 3/18/12

Zen Master Dogan Actualizing the Fundamental Point (Genjo Koan) Verses 10-12 A fish swims in the ocean, and no matter how far it swims there is no end to the water. A bird flies in the sky, and no matter how far it flies there is no end to the air. However, the fish and the bird have never left their elements. When their activity is large their field is large. When their need is small their field is small. Thus, each of them totally covers its full range, and each of them totally experiences its realm. If the bird leaves the air it will die at once. If the fish leaves the water it will die...

The Greatest Gift To Give – Hua Hu Ching #75 – Text Reading 3/11/12

The Greatest Gift To Give – Hua Hu Ching The Unknown Teachings of Lau Tzu #75 Would you like to liberate yourself from the lower realms of life? Would you like to save the world from the degradation and destruction it seems destined for? Then step away from shallow mass movements and quietly go to work on your own self-awareness. If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own...

Into Month 2 – Notes from March 4th 2012 Prax Period

This weeks practice period was just excellent* We had all had a bit of a wild week so the air had an explosive quality to it. The fist round of zazen was a bit hard for everyone but for me it seemed the zendo had a very rich & vibrant quality to it & everyone seemed in dire need to come together, slow down & rest into the stillness. The healing qualities of zazen are bottomless & unknowable. Even when it seems hard, it is like passing through a giant ring of fire but the cool water of tranquility patiently awaits us on the other side. We had 5 people come together with one...

Tao Te Ching -The Anchient Masters Welcomed All Things [v15-16] – Text Reading 2/19/12

Here is the Text reading from our Practice on 2/19/12 TaoTe Ching [v15-16] – Stephen Mitchell Translation The ancient Masters were profound and subtle. Their wisdom was unfathomable. There is no way to describe it; all we can describe is their appearance. They were careful as someone crossing an iced-over stream. Alert as a warrior in enemy territory. Courteous as a guest. Fluid as melting ice. Shapable as a block of wood. Receptive as a valley. Clear as a glass of water. Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the...

Buddha’s Zen – Text Reading 2/12/12

Text Reading from 2/12/12 UZ Practice Gathering* Buddha’s Zen Thus I have heard, The Historical Buddha said: I consider the positions of kings and rulers as that of dust motes. I observe treasures of gold and gems as so many bricks and pebbles. I look upon the finest silken robes as tattered rags. I see myriad worlds of the universe as small seeds of fruit, and the greatest lake in India as a drop of oil on my foot. I perceive the teachings of the world to be the illusion of magicians. I discern the highest conception of emancipation as a golden brocade in a dream, and view the holy...

Universally Recommended Instructions for Zazen – Text Reading 2/5/12

Text reading from Feb 5th UZ Opening Service – Thank you all who attended. _/!\_ May all beings be liberated! Fukanzazengi— Zen Master Dogen “Universally Recommended Instructions for Zazen” The Way is originally perfect and all-pervading. How could it be contingent on practice and realization? The true vehicle is self-sufficient. What need is there for special effort? Indeed, the whole body is free from dust. Who could believe in a means to brush it clean? It is never apart from this very place; what is the use of traveling around to practice? And yet, if there is a hair’s-breadth...

Review of U-Z Opening Practice Service Feb 5th 2012

U-Z Opening Practice Service was a truly wonderful experience. It is a bottomless pleasure to help keep the wheel of Dharma in motion. To hear the Sangha Covenant for the 1st time brought tears to my ears. We are truly here to actualize good in this world – starting with ourselves, & ending with… well, there is none! Everything went smoothly & the energy shared was positive & supportive. Even though it was everyone’s first time practicing the chants together, it carried through rather well! The space is just perfect for our practice. Clean, warm, a gentle sacred...
