Notes from April Beginners Practice 4/7/13

This month we invested in paid advertizing on Facebook for our Beginners Practice Period along with general paid advertizing for our Facebook page. In result, the attendance appeared to be phenomenal for us with 33 people confirming attendance on the Facebook Event Page along with 11 maybes. Being that we only had 10 cushions total, we needed to put special attention into creating proper accommodations for all the anticipated attendance. At least a portion will of them come right? So we figured it out, got it all together & set up. Interestingly, only 1 person ended up actually attending...

EQUANIMITY – The Drinking Gourd Podcast

On march 21st 2013, we listened to a wonderful Podcast together on the subject of EQUANIMITY. In this Recording, Jay Rinsen Chikyo Weik gives a talk and leads discussion at the Toledo Zen Center on June 11, 2008 on the subject of EQUANIMITY. Equanimity or Upekkha (in Pali) is a mind in balance, free of discrimination, above distinction, and rooted in insight. This balance is not indifference, but active mindfulness. Because it is rooted in insight of anatta (not-self), it is not unbalanced by the passions of attraction and aversion and is free of the extremes of joy or sorrow. (Alternate...

Living Sangha – Notes From Practice 2/17/13

Single-Pointed Effort Sangha Actualized Sunday Feb 17th 2013 was our Drinking Gourd Practice Period. We arrived at our meditation hall (which is a shared co-op yoga space) to discover a workshop in mid-motion.  As our Zen Practitioners began to arrive… what to do? Well, we grabbed some cushions, jumped in some cars & headed over to our place (Shaon & Mara’s home) to hold practice there! It was nourishing to have our home meditation space filled with zazen, sutra chant, & many amazing people that we have the opportunity to call Sangha* We had forgotten to grab our...

Generosity – Buddhism & The Spirit of Giving

Whether we celebrate Christmas or not, in December the Christian Holidays are all around us here  in the United States & there are many Buddhists which enjoy celebrating Christmas or join their families for Christmas gatherings. So for our UZ Zen Practice Period on December 23rd 2012, in honor of Christmas being only a couple days away, we followed up our Zazen with a discussion on the subject of what is referred to as “Dana” in Buddhism, which means “Generosity”. Together, we shared a great discussion about the following texts of “Giving even ones last...

Kinhin Tears – Notes from Practice 10/21/12

Thank you everyone who attended UZ last Sunday. It was a Great Practice Period* The weather was so nice.. we had the window open, we could hear the birds enjoying the weather & the Meditation Hall was filled with many warm hearts* I end up crying a lot during Zen Retreats but never have I cried during kinhin (walking meditation). But last Sunday, for the 1st time at our Practice Group, I found myself in tears during Kinhin because I was filled with joy to be fulfilling this roll bestowed upon me of sharing this wonderful gift of zen practice with others. We are becoming a family here.....

Inner Peace Fest & 1st Beginners Practice – Notes from Practice May 5th & 6th 2012

Last weekend was a great weekend of happenings for us at Underdog Zendo. Inner Peace Festival – May 5th 2012 Saturday some of us went to the  Chicago Inner Peace Festival to join MedMob Chicago in meditation. Our meditation time was during the Gong Meditation performed by Kenny Kolter, which was interesting for us because in zazen we do not try to create a blissful experience, rather we just calmly sit in bare-bones reality & as such we work to just take in all sense experience equally. So we hear the Gongs, we hear the planes passing over head, we hear the children &...

Earth Day 2012 – This was an wonderful & adventuress day of practice. Fist we had a MedMob gathering in Millennium park. This was just the simple act of people showing up to a public location to practice silent meditation together. On Earth Day we joined over 300 Cities world wide in this unified practice & peaceful intentions in our hearts. We had 22 people show up to meditate together of different faiths & contemplative traditions. The UZ bunch had 7 people in attendance including a fun crew form Elgin, IL. thanx to the organizing efforts of our wonderful members. The...

Blooming Sangha Meeting the Moment – Notes from Practice 3/25/12

This practice Period had a feeling of a new stage to it. We have had a quite a few folks that have been practicing with us pretty much since our conception in February 2012. Now we are getting to know each other more & the group is starting to get a real feeling of a supportive community & dharma family which is something I felt was lacking in quite a few of the other groups I have practiced with.  To me a Sangha is more than a group of strangers coming together to practice zazen & then disappearing to their isolated lives. From my view, if the flower of enlightenment is honestly...

Open Sky, Weeping Willow, Kwocking Geese, Zafu’s & Soccor Balls – Notes from Practice 3/18/12

Another interesting first for U-Z… This period, we were to end our practice early for another event & also one of our members was running behind so we  needing to pick him up from the train station so we were all rushing to get to the zendo early to make sure we began service on the dot. Once we arrived, the urgency just dropped away & there was a sense that it would only be the 3 of us this day. It was a beautiful warm day out so we decided to take the Zendo outside ! We packed some supplies & grabbed some cushions & waited to make sure there were no stranglers before...

The Texture of Lyfe – Notes From Practice 3/11/12

This practice period had a refreshing quality to it. It turned out to be a warm day so we opened the windows. Our practice seemed very connected to each other & there was a sense that we all came together for good intentions. The wind blowing in during zazen seemed to connect us all & the sounds from the street let us know that we were in the World. It had been an intense time for many of us in our lives so I could not measure the importance of us retuning to this practice during such times. There is a natural healing that happens & also an energetic “recalibration”, a...

Into Month 2 – Notes from March 4th 2012 Prax Period

This weeks practice period was just excellent* We had all had a bit of a wild week so the air had an explosive quality to it. The fist round of zazen was a bit hard for everyone but for me it seemed the zendo had a very rich & vibrant quality to it & everyone seemed in dire need to come together, slow down & rest into the stillness. The healing qualities of zazen are bottomless & unknowable. Even when it seems hard, it is like passing through a giant ring of fire but the cool water of tranquility patiently awaits us on the other side. We had 5 people come together with one...

So Watch the Thought – Text Reading 3/4/12

Text Reading from 3/4/12 UZ Practice Period: Thus I have heard, The Shakyamuni Buddha said: The thought manifests as the word; The word manifests as the deed; The deed develops into habit; And habit hardens into character; So watch the thought and its ways with care, And let it spring from love born out of concern for all beings. As the shadow follows the body, As we think, so we become. ∞...
